Session 2 - Straw Craft Course for Beginners - SWI

Skillshare Course |  August 19th | 10am-4pm | DCA, Dundee

The Scottish Women's Institutes is committed to lifelong learning for all women in Scotland, and this course is part of our series of learning craft skills. We want to upskill potential crafters and existing crafters, recognising the positive links between making and mental well-being.

Beginners and experienced crafters are invited to come along to part two of the course in straw work. This course will be full of learning, fun & friendship led by Elaine Lindsay, of Something Corny. Straw work is one of Britain’s traditional crafts; it has been practiced for hundreds of years and we want to preserve this craft for future generations.

SWI Heritage & Culture Group

New SWI Heritage & Culture Group  |  August 31st | 6pm-7pm | Online

Join us for a gathering to find out more about how we are protecting our heritage. Curating and safeguarding SWI's rich heritage is vitally important. This is why we're spearheading a comprehensive archiving project, estimated to span two years or more.

We warmly invite all members who have an interest in this project, whether you have a specific story to tell or would just like to know what's happening, to join us for this informal online evening session.

SWI's CEO, Diane Cooper, will lead the informal session and explain how members can get involved to help us tell the SWI story and answer any queries you may have.

An evening of bustling activities open to all, showcasing Scotland's talented crafters, chefs, and producers for all the family.

Come along to see a fabulous exhibition of SWI members' work and have hands-on sessions with experts in make & take workshops, too. Plus, there's a preloved clothes pop-up shop with fabulous women's clothing on offer at very reasonable prices! Lots of fun!

2023 Warnock Trophy Competition

SWI Skill Share: Cyanotype photography for beginners

Skill Share | Online event | October 5th | 7pm - 8pm

The SWI is committed to lifelong learning and these brand-new online Skill Share Sessions are aimed at bringing women together to learn from experts and each other. Following World Cyanotype day at the end of September, the SWI is bringing you a fun and informative online demonstration of how to get started in cyanotype!

During this interactive session, SWI member, Lynn Winpenny, will guide you through the basics of cyanotype photography and teach you the basics on how to create stunning blue-toned prints using sunlight and simple materials. No prior experience is required, as we'll cover everything from preparing the chemicals to exposing and developing your prints.
